Even if the rural towns were a mass of concrete, if they were of any size at all they usually had a relatively impressive church, and if no church, then there were these decorated and partly-sheltered devotional stands. So anyway, I cycled to the Romanian border the same day that I left Chisinau, and it was a completely uneventful crossing with the exception of accidentally overshooting Moldovan customs. I got a visa-free, cost-free, interrogation-free entry stamp from smiling Romanian border gaurds who wished me a pleasant "bon voyage." (1-9-05)
