Why does my microwave need to know the day, month and year?

Well... if it were a Microsoft product I'd say it needs to know so that it can suddenly stop working when the license needs renewed. If it were an Apple product it would need to know so that every 1 minutes it could say in a lousy computer-generated voice, "It is now 5:35 PM on Saturday, June 12th, 2003" or something to that extent.
If its not either of those, I have no clue
