Cool 'Where's Dave' Added to Site
Added a cool little feature over on the right sidebar - Tells you if I am currently at my computer or how long it has been since I have logged on if I'm not.

*Update* MSN's recent (September) update has killed this client :( Will have to look at getting it working again sometime.

European Copyright far too short!
Great transcript from BBC Radio's Today program on how EMI is suffering due to the 'short' 50 year length of European copyright protection - One sided and obviously so.
Thanks to the guys at BEMLI for this.

EU Copyright Directive coming to the UK
The UK is implementing the EUCD which is similar to the USA's DMCA - Outlawing the copying of encrypted digital content. Each EU country is free to implement it however they like within certain constraints. Unfortuently the Patent Office's proposal chose to use all the bits protecting the content owners but none of the bits protecting consumers' rights. The patent office was running a consultation period for people's feedback. Below is the letter I sent them.
Thankfully, it looks like the UK Patent office received enough questions on its proposed implementation that it is having to carefully reconsider its ideas.

File System Security Policy
This article provides a brief overview of the fundamentals of file system security and the usual methods of implementation. It then studies in depth the extra strengths provided by encryption methods and how these should be implemented. Microsoft's Encrypting File System is studied as a useful example of what problems operating system level encryption solves and what weaknesses are left open.

Setting up Your First VServer
Vservers are a great concept that lets you create many virtual servers inside 1 GNU/Linux server. This is great for virtual hosting, lab tests, security restrictions and just playing. The Vserver concept is very efficient in terms of memory and processor use (I have 3 Vservers on this server, a cranky 380MHz K6 with 128MB RAM). There is a VServer homepage with mailing list and FAQ
